Flew Publishes His New Book

In 2004, Philosophia Christi published a unique article that made headlines around the world--a very unusual circumstance for an academic journal of philosophy. One of the world's most famous atheists, Prof. Antony Flew, made a formal presentation about his change of mind on the existence of God that was profound and truly newsworthy. Prof. Flew has now come out with a book about his journey and Gary Habermas--Flew's friend, interviewer, and debate partner on many occasions has done an in-depth review.

Update (10 Nov)
This is kicking off now. Here is an excellent William Dembski commentary/opinion piece following the 'Turning of an Atheist' NY times article by Mark Oppenheimer on Flews new book 'There is a God'. When I first read Oppenheimer's review I though that it was perhaps well intentioned, but unless we were to accuse the publisher HarperCollins of telling downright lies, we can see that it clearly suffers from being poorly researched, and is disingenuious and off the point. It seems nothing more than a character assination attempt (A logical fallacy called the ad hominem fallacy), and doesn't satisfactorily engage with the philosophical arguments.

Here is the press release that shows that Oppenheimer's work is untrue:

HarperCollins on the New York Times article

Here is Antony Flew's response to the claim, made in the NY Times magazine article, that he did not write the book (from a press release issued by the publisher 11/7/2007):

"My name is on the book and it represents exactly my opinions. I would not have a book issued in my name that I do not 100 percent agree with. I needed someone to do the actual writing because I'm 84 and that was Roy Varghese's role. The idea that someone manipulated me because I'm old is exactly wrong. I may be old but it is hard to manipulate me. This is my book and it represents my thinking."

Harper One deputy publisher Mark Tauber adds, "We stand behind this book. Roy Varghese took Tony's thoughts and put them in publishable form. This is not an unusual practice." Tauber adds, "Unfortunately, the NYT Magazine writer generalized from Flew's aphasia to senility--which is far from accurate. Additionally, the NYT writer completely skipped the philosophical content of the book, dismissing Tony's arguments for God's existence in one word, calling it 'pseudoscience' and so insulting both Tony and anyone persuaded that these arguments might be true."

That press release first appeared on an Amazon.com book review written by the literary agent of Pastor Bob Hostetler.

That's where big, reputable firms like Harper Collins are now putting press releases.

Gone are the old days when press releases went to the press.

In the modern age, you get the literary agent of Christian evangelists to put them on amazon.

The Amazon reviews accuse Varghese of being 'dishonest'. ' a hack Christian tract', the book as being 'bogus' and even Tauber said the NYT pieces was an attack on integrity.

But we can say what we like about Varghese and his book as he cannot sue anybody.

He cannot risk having Antony Flew on the stand being asked questions about the book.

Varghese cannot risk having Pastor Bob Hostetler being asked what his role in the book was.

So Varghese has to sit there and let people call the book 'dishonest', knowing that everybody knows he cannot sue for libel.
